The International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) is a sports club based in Monaco City and operates under the patronage of World Athletics. The IAU is dedicated to developing ultradistance running internationally within the rules and regulations set by World Athletics. As the international governing body for ultradistance running, one of the main objectives of the IAU is to promote and develop long distance running worldwide by encouraging specific activities in each of the World Athletics Continental Areas.
The IAU organises various competitions to showcase the sport of ultradistance running. The 100 km distance is considered the “flagship” of the IAU, as it is officially sanctioned by World Athletics and also ratifies 100 km world records. Some major IAU competitions include the 100 km World Championships, 100 km Area Championships, 24H World Championships, 24H Area Championships, Trail World Championship, and 50 km World Championship.
