The Sydney Uni Velo Club, also known as SUVELO, is a prestigious road cycling club located in Sydney. The club is dedicated to the ongoing development of its riders and welcomes cyclists of all levels of experience and ability. SUVELO offers a range of rides throughout the week and encourages all members to participate in races.
One of the highlights of SUVELO is the Friday Coffee Ride, which serves as a social gathering for new and prospective members to meet the club and its existing members. This ride is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the club's culture and riding style. However, it's important to note that while SUVELO is inclusive and friendly, they are not equipped to assist beginners. Therefore, riders looking to join should have some experience riding in groups and be comfortable riding at higher speeds.
Safety is a top priority for SUVELO, and each ride is led by an experienced Ride Captain who is responsible for ensuring the well-being of all riders. It is crucial for members to follow the instructions and guidance of the Ride Captain during the rides.
SUVELO offers a range of graded rides throughout the week, catering to varying skill levels. The bunch speeds are organised based on average speed, approximating different race grades. It is recommended for riders to start with an easier bunch speed and progressively move up to faster speeds as they become more confident. This ensures that riders are matched with groups that are suitable for their abilities.
Most rides organised by SUVELO start at the Woollhara Gates of Centennial Park, with north shore rides beginning opposite the Crows Nest Hotel. Start times for rides may vary but are generally scheduled for around 6am.
Membership with SUVELO provides access to a supportive community of cyclists and the opportunity to participate in races. SUVELO is one of the most successful cycling clubs in Sydney, having won multiple interclub and state championships in 2018.
