Clinic Focus: Recognising Advantage & Finding the Open Player
This clinic teaches players to quickly recognise numerical or positional advantage and make simple, effective decisions with the ball. Through small-sided games (2v1, 3v1, 3v2, 4v3, 5v4) in both full-court and half-court settings, players learn to keep their head up, maintain good spacing, and understand that advantage is created by ball movement and attacking the defense. Key principles include attacking to draw two defenders, passing on time, and recognising when to finish versus when to move the ball to an open teammate.
Application in Game Situations
In full-court scenarios, the focus is on fast-break reads—identifying the defender, passing early, and converting advantage before the defense recovers. In the half-court, players learn to create and exploit advantage through penetration, post play, and quick ball reversal. Emphasis is placed on making decisions quickly, attacking close-outs, and understanding that advantage is temporary. Success is shown through unselfish play, open shots or layups, and consistent recognition of the open player rather than forcing contested attempts.
