The Kiwi RUFC was founded in 1923 by a group of New Zealand soldiers stationed in Melbourne and is tied to the VRU in 1926, after playing league for the first few years. The impact of the Kiwi RUFC the league was immediately very heavy and Exiles were awarded the title the following year and reconfirming for two consecutive editions. In 1939 came the fifth and final title for the Kiwi. Cease activities during the war the Kiwi returned to business after the conflict but managed to collect only a title of second division in 1961.
The Hawthorn RFC was founded as Old Scotch in 1953 and changed its name to Hawthorn twenty years later, in 1973.
