The Bullmastiff Club of Victoria Inc is Australia's first Bullmastiff Club, making them the pioneers of the breed. The club was established in 1964 and was officially incorporated in 1993. Initially, it was the only recognised club for Bullmastiffs in Australia until 1988. Today, the club has members from all over Australia, as well as from New Zealand, South Africa, England, and Finland.
The club's Patroness is Mrs. Mary Cox of Colom Kennels, England, who has been incredibly supportive of the club by making generous donations to their trophy funds and major efforts. The club also has honorary members, including Mr. Ernie Yarra and Roy and Bonnie Spicer, who have provided valuable assistance to the club over the years.
In addition, there are six life members, including Mrs. Joy Stevenson and Mr. Brice Lummis, who were founding members of the club.
The Bullmastiff Club of Victoria Inc has been actively involved in promoting the breed through various activities. They hold two shows per year for Bullmastiffs, including both open parades and championship shows. These shows attract a significant number of exhibitors from across Australia. In 1998, on the occasion of their 25th silver anniversary, the club organised a championship show that attracted 111 exhibits from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia.
In addition to shows, the club also conducts breed lectures and field nights for aspiring judges. Their main objective is to promote and encourage the breeding of purebred Bullmastiffs and elevate the standards and exhibition of registered dogs of this breed. The club also aims to educate its members about the laws and regulations relating to the ownership and care of dogs.
Recognising the scarcity of literature solely dedicated to Bullmastiffs, the club provides information sheets that cover a brief history of the breed and outline the standard recognised by the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC). These information sheets are available upon request.
