Bushflyers ACT is a prominent sports club in Canberra, Australia, specialising in orienteering. Undoubtedly one of the most successful orienteering clubs in the country, Bushflyers has produced numerous Australian champions and representatives. The club has even clinched the prestigious club championship at the national level multiple times, solidifying their reputation as an esteemed organisation.
Born out of a merger between two original Canberra-based orienteering clubs – the Northside Navigators and the Majura Macropods - Bushflyers came into existence around 1990. Since then, they have been actively involved in fostering a strong sense of community among their members. The club organises regular social events known as “Bushies Swarm,” informal gatherings that rotate through the homes of different members. These events serve as fantastic opportunities for newcomers and existing members alike to connect and build meaningful relationships.
Bushflyers prides itself on being both inclusive and supportive, particularly towards newcomers. With a plethora of experienced members willing to lend a helping hand, newcomers can expect a warm welcome and guidance at local events. The club holds a special annual award, the Ian Booth Award, named in honour of the late Ian Booth, a revered member who passed away from a sudden heart attack in 2011. The award, often accompanied by a well-deserved bottle of high-quality Australian red wine, recognises the most improved Master's level competitor.
To be eligible, participants must have competed in at least 50% of the ACT League events, with the award reserved for first-time winners.
For those seeking to contact or join the Bushflyers, Valerie Barker convenes the club and can be reached at 0410 151 554. Additionally, event roster management is overseen by Jo Hobson, who can be contacted via email at bushflyersroster@gmail. Com. The club maintains an active online presence through their website, where visitors can access relevant news, event updates, and archives.
The website also provides information about upcoming events, allowing members and interested individuals to plan their participation accordingly.
As an organisation, Bushflyers ACT acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, the Ngunnawal people, and pays tribute to their Elders past and present. Honoured to hold events on the ancestral lands of the Ngunnawal people, the club recognises and respects the rich history and cultural heritage of the First Australians. With a dedicated office at Building 3, Jamison Centre, Macquarie, Orienteering ACT operates from 9 am to 1:30 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The organisation can be contacted via phone at (02) 6182 1815 or email at office@act.
