Cycling became a popular pastime and competitive sport in Cairns. Over the years, the sport developed and grew, leading to the establishment of the Cairns Cycling Club.
Founded over 70 years ago, Cairns Cycling Club is a cycle racing-oriented club based in tropical North Queensland. The club aims to foster the sport of cycling in both track and road racing disciplines while providing a safe and fun riding experience for all. Its primary goal is to build a strong cycling community in North Queensland.
One of the key venues for track racing is the iconic Smith Park Velodrome in Manunda, which also serves as the club's home and clubhouse. The club organises adult and junior skills clinics at the velodrome, providing opportunities for cyclists of all ages and skill levels to develop their abilities.
In addition to track racing, Cairns Cycling Club also hosts a variety of road races throughout the year. These races take place in various locations, including Mareeba, Gordonvale, Bramston Beach, Milla Milla, and Malanda. Among the most anticipated events organised by the club are the annual Mareeba MiHaven and Cairns Cup on Wheels, held on the October long weekend. Riders of all grades are welcome to participate in these races, provided they hold an AusCycling race licence.
Membership with Cairns Cycling Club requires AusCycling registration. AusCycling offers memberships for riders of all levels and abilities, from beginners to professionals. When registering, individuals can nominate Cairns Cycling Club as their affiliated club. The club offers various membership options, ranging from recreational to competitive.
Those who wish to race with Cairns Cycling Club must obtain a 'Race All Discipline' licence, which covers road and track racing, as well as mountain biking and BMX.
For those interested in experiencing the fun of riding and racing before committing to a full membership, Cairns Cycling Club offers a 4-week free trial membership. Free trial members are covered when participating in AusCycling activities, including social and recreational rides, as well as club-level events.
Cairns Cycling Club is committed to promoting the safety and well-being of its members and has established policies such as the Club Constitution, Member Protection Policy, and Junior Grading Policy to ensure a positive and inclusive environment for all participants. Additionally, members are required to follow the rules and policies set forth by AusCycling.
With its rich history and dedication to the sport of cycling, Cairns Cycling Club continues to play a significant role in the local cycling community. Whether you're a seasoned racer or just starting out, the club offers opportunities for individuals to participate, develop their skills, and be part of a vibrant cycling community in Cairns.
