Callisthenics NT, also known as the Northern Territory Callisthenics Association, is the governing body of Callisthenics in the Northern Territory of Australia. Established in 1983, the association is responsible for managing all programmes and activities related to the development and promotion of callisthenics for participants and clubs in the region.
The vision of Callisthenics NT is to work together to grow and develop the sport, ensuring that “the Territory knows and loves Callisthenics. ” Their purpose is to provide a professional, supportive, and friendly environment for members and their families to enjoy the sport of Callisthenics.
Currently, Callisthenics NT clubs operate within the Greater Darwin area in Malak, Howard Springs, Palmerston, and Jingili. However, there are no clubs operating in Katherine, Tennant Creek, or Alice Springs at present.
Callisthenics, derived from the Greek words “kallos” for beauty and “sthenos” for strength, aims to combine physical strength and beauty. While its primary focus is on physical fitness, the sport also emphasises the social aspect, building confidence, and self-esteem among participants. Callisthenics integrates elements of Gymnastics, Ballet, Folk Dance, Jazz Ballet, Apparatus, Figure Marching, Mime, and Singing. It is considered a uniquely Australian sport that nurtures discipline, teamwork, a competitive spirit, and a sense of responsibility.
Callisthenics NT organises team competitions in September each year, as well as individual events such as Solo, Graceful Solo, and Duos in May. These events provide opportunities for participants to showcase their skills, improve their abilities, and celebrate their achievements.
In recent news, an Intermediate Representative Team composed of 10 individuals has been selected to represent the Northern Territory at the Australian Calisthenic Federation National Championships in Brisbane from 5-8 July 2023. The NTCA also announced a new executive team consisting of Anna Collins as President, Melita Eassie as Secretary, and Anna McGowan as Treasurer.
