Over time, the game evolved into two forms: golf and pall mall. Pall mall, a precursor to croquet, became popular in towns where space was limited. The game involved hitting a box-wood ball through arches or hoops with the fewest hits possible.

With the introduction of croquet to England from Ireland in 1852, the game as we know it today began to take shape.
