GUIDES Canberra Roller Derby League (CRDL) is a dynamic roller derby league located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Founded in 2008, CRDL has grown to become a prominent force in the roller derby community. CRDL proudly plays under the established roller derby code by the international governing body, Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).
CRDL embraces WFTDA's gender statement, which provides an inclusive space for individuals who identify as trans women, intersex women, gender expansive, non-binary, genderqueer, or gender-non-conforming and closely identify with women's flat track roller derby. The league also welcomes participants across all genders to take part in various official positions, including referees and non-skating officials.
The league comprises four home teams: Black 'n' Blue Bells, Brindabelters, Surly Gryphons, and Red Bellied Black Hearts. Each team consists of dedicated skaters who compete in exhilarating roller derby games throughout the season. Additionally, CRDL has a representative squad called the Vice City Rollers (VCRs), competing in both Australian and international tournaments, showcasing their skills at the highest level.
CRDL takes pride in its mission to promote competitive flat track roller derby while fostering a sense of community and camaraderie in the Canberra region. As a not-for-profit organisation, CRDL is run by skaters for skaters. The league emphasises the values of fun, health, fitness, safety, teamwork, and positive body image, ensuring the longevity and legitimacy of roller derby as a legitimate sport.
CRDL acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Custodians of the land on which they skate, train, and play, including the Ngambri and Ngunawal/Ngunnawal People, associated clans and groups, and their Elders past and present. The league recognises their continuing connexion to the land, waters, and culture, with an understanding that sovereignty was never ceded.
In addition to the home teams and representative squads, CRDL also nurtures its juniors team, the Prime Sinisters. This development programme allows young skaters to hone their skills and engage in the sport while promoting a safe and supportive environment.
CRDL is grateful for the support of its sponsors, who play an essential role in sustaining and growing the league. Their generous contributions enable CRDL to continue promoting roller derby in the Canberra community while supporting the physical and mental development of its members.
For those interested in joining the Canberra Roller Derby League, there is an ongoing recruitment process for new skaters. Whether you are an experienced skater or new to the sport, CRDL provides a welcoming and inclusive environment for all levels of expertise.
