About
Cricket has been played in the district since the gold rush days of the 1850s when the first clubs were formed.
In March of 1862 a team of 22 Castlemaine players defeated the touring All- England Eleven. This was the first defeat of an English team on Victorian soil and their second loss for the tour in the colony. The other loss was to a combined Vic-NSW team also of 22 players.
In September 1892, Mr. W. Embley offered a trophy for competition amongst the clubs of the district. From this offer the Castlemaine District Cricket Association was formed.
The first season commenced on Saturday October 22nd with 6 clubs and has operated continuously since except the two World Wars. This makes the CDCA one of the oldest cricket associations in Victoria and Australia.
Over the 116 years of the CDCA many clubs have come and gone. A few have gone to other asssociations, some clubs played here while their association was in recess and other clubs have folded or merged. In all over 50 clubs have played in the CDCA in this time.
Currently the CDCA has 13 affiliated clubs supplying 28 senior teams in 3 grades, 10 junior teams in an under 16 years C grade and 6 teams in the Under 13 years competition.
