Welcome to the Darwin Flyrodders! This sports club, located in the Un-Incorporated Area of Australia, provides a supportive environment for both experienced fly fishers and newcomers to enjoy the sport of fly-fishing. The majority of our members are highly experienced fly fishers who are eager to share their knowledge and actively support and promote the club.
The Darwin Flyrodders were established in 2000, following the success of the Saltwater Flyrodders of the NT, the first fly-fishing club in the Northern Territory. Since its inauguration, the Darwin Flyrodders continue to host two premier fly-fishing competitions: the Saltwater Challenge and the Freshwater Fly Fishing Open. Additionally, the club organises various activities for its members, including the Top Ten Species Competition.
Our main goals as a club are to provide a recreational and social hub for the Northern Territory community to share advice and experiences in the sport of fly-fishing, foster and encourage the growth of fly-fishing, fly tying, and fly casting within the community, and promote the involvement of our youth in the sport's development.
The Northern Territory boasts a diverse fishery that offers numerous opportunities for both freshwater and saltwater fly-fishing, catering to anglers of all skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned fly fisher or a beginner looking to learn, our club welcomes you to explore the exciting world of fly-fishing.
Club meetings take place on the last Wednesday of each month at the Palmerston Game Fishing Club in Marlow Lagoon, NT. These meetings provide an excellent opportunity for members to connect, learn from each other, and stay updated on club activities.
In addition to our regular meetings, the Darwin Flyrodders organise various events throughout the year. One of our most prominent events is the Territory Saltwater Fly Fishing Challenge, an exciting competition held annually in September in the fish-rich waters of Bynoe Harbour. This contest focuses on the catch and release of seven target species, including Barramundi, Salmon, Tarpon, Queenfish, Trevally, Mackerel, and Snapper. Participants compete to land all seven species in a single day, making for a thrilling challenge and an unforgettable experience.
Apart from the competition itself, the challenge includes meals, evening entertainment, presentations, and great prizes for the winners. We also provide a competition shirt to participants, although availability may be limited for entries received after the early bird deadline.
To secure accommodation during the Territory Saltwater Fly Fishing Challenge, we recommend contacting the Sandpalms Roadhouse Tropical Motel and mentioning that you are a competitor.
Whether you're interested in becoming a member or simply participating in our events, we invite you to join the Darwin Flyrodders and experience the joy and excitement of fly-fishing in the beautiful Northern Territory.
