Earthly Delights is a unique sports club located in Canberra, Australia. It is the only organisation in the country, and one of few in the world, that focuses on studying and enjoying dances, dance music, and dance dress from the ballroom era of 1450 to 1900. The club was established by John Gardiner-Garden, who was involved in various dance-related activities from 1997 to 2007, including teaching, leading, displaying, and playing with his band 'Earthly Delights', dance troupe 'The Bordonian Heritage Dancers', and series such as 'Dancing on the Lake', 'Historic Ballroom', 'Court Dance', and 'Costume Balls'.
In 2006, all the teaching and self-organised events were brought together under the banner of Earthly Delights Historic Dance Academy. The Academy, led by John as the director of music and dance and his wife Aylwen as the administrator and costume director, aims to strengthen and deepen people's understanding and competency in historic dance. They believe in approaching dances as constantly evolving and interweaving traditions, rather than rigidly categorising them.
The club offers a wide range of activities, both organised by themselves and in response to bookings. They have regular Saturday afternoon classes called 'Dancing through the Ages', as well as a regular Wednesday evening extension class. Additionally, they host monthly costume balls, special dance weekends, periodic public shows, and other opportunities to enjoy dancing with themes ranging from the Renaissance to the late Victorian era.
One of the highlights of Earthly Delights is the famous Jane Austen Festival held every April, which spans three days of dance and costume. The club also offers entertainment services, where they can come to your venue and provide engaging performances.
Earthly Delights is not only about dancing but also encompasses various related passions. Under the banner, John and Aylwen Gardiner-Garden pursue their love for gardening, classes, workshops, events, commissions, performances, and publications. Their artistic life, garden design services, and the talented musicians and dancers they have worked with over the years can be found under the 'About Us' section on their website.
For those interested in joining the club or attending their upcoming events, the website provides all the necessary information. From balls and dance costume weekends to special workshops and displays, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Earthly Delights is truly a one-of-a-kind sports club that brings history and artistry to life through the joy of dance.
