Sensei East began training in 1976 at the Burwood dojo, then in 1985 he moved to Lilydale and trained at the Lilydale dojo. In 1989 he assumed the responsibilities of running the Lilydale dojo. Sensei East has travelled overseas to England, Portugal, and America to attend courses run by Sensei Shiomitsu. He also trained with Sensei Grimes in Bristol and Sensei Kazutaka Otsuka.
East's Karate School was formed in 1994 when Sensei East decided he had had enough of training in cold halls in Lilydale, and Mt Evelyn areas and moved the Wado Ryu Karate Club into permanent facilities in main street Lilydale. In 2001 the school moved to 19 Maroondah Hwy Lilydale.
Sensei East believes in training for self-defence and the jujitsu side of Wado Ryu Karate Do more than for sport and tournaments.
