Findon Cycle Speedway, located in Adelaide, South Australia, is home to the world-famous Findon Skid Kids. Established on February 26th, 1958, this club has a rich history and is still active today. While Cycle Speedway is the main sport played at Findon, the Findon Skid Kids were best known for their Trick Riding Display Team, which performed at various shows and fetes in South Australia and Victoria. The team gained recognition when they performed in front of 43,000 people per show at the Sydney Royal Easter Shows in 1973 and 1978.
One of the highlights of their display was the 7 bike pyramid with 26 riders, as well as the famous fire-jump. Although the display team disbanded in 1996, the fire-jump still continues.
Currently, Findon Cycle Speedway focuses on the sport of Cycle Speedway, which is played in several countries including England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Poland, and soon, New Zealand. The World Championships will be held in Adelaide in November 2017, providing an opportunity for aspiring riders to compete at a global level. In addition to the regular racing events, such as Individual Local Points Meetings, the club also organises team racing events, including three team tournaments, best pairs, and individual championships. These competitions add variety to the racing calendar and test the bike handling, technical ability, and physical fitness of the riders.
At Findon Cycle Speedway, new members are always welcome, and they receive the first five race meetings free. The club also provides helmets, gloves, and bikes for those who don't have their own. The sport allows some body contact in the older age groups, with bumps coming from the upper torso and lower limbs being actively involved in the physical aspect of the sport. Safety is a priority, and all competitors must wear helmets and be covered from the neck down.
While pile-ups may occur in the fast-paced sport, broken bones are rare.
Age is not a barrier at Findon Cycle Speedway, as participants range from 3 years old to 70 years old. There are nine age groups, including two specifically for girls. Each age group has maximum wheel sizes to ensure fair competition. The Findon Skid Kids Cycle Speedway is Australia's oldest Cycle Speedway and Skid Kid Club, with Mick Harley, who was just 15 years old at the time, founding the club.
The dedication of past and present members has allowed the club to develop the best facilities and track in the world.
Training sessions are held every Wednesday night at Findon Cycle Speedway, allowing riders to improve their bike handling, technical skills, and physical fitness. Findon Cycle Speedway welcomes communication from other Cycle Speedway clubs operating in different countries at their email address.
Whether you are a beginner looking to try out the sport or an experienced rider seeking to compete at the highest level, Findon Cycle Speedway is the perfect place to indulge your passion for Cycle Speedway in Adelaide, South Australia.
