The Tasmanian Game Fishing Association was originally formed in the mid 1950s, as the Tasmanian Game Fishing Club, by a few of the Pioneer Game Fishers of the time.
Anglers had been going to sea in ex- commercial fishing boats with the crudest of equipment, catching school sized Southern Bluefin Tuna.
This was long before the commencement of Commercial long-line enterprises from Overseas or Australian flagged boats. The TGFC fished on its own and affiliated with the Game Fishing Association of Australia.
In 1960, with the establishment of the Tuna Club of Tasmania, the TGFC disbanded and was re-born as the Tasmanian Game Fishing Association, representing the Tuna Club and the later formed Game Fishing Club of Northern Tasmania to the GFAA.
The TGFA has since those days seen the establishment of two more Game Fishing Clubs, at St. Helens and a second Southern Tasmanian based Club, the Southern Gamefish Club.
