Geelong Underwater Hockey Club is a sports club located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The club aims to provide support for individuals of all ages and abilities to participate in a unique, non-contact sport that is fun, offers great exercise, and can be played for many years past the usual age range for most sports. Geelong Underwater Hockey welcomes individuals with basic to advanced swimming skills, and it is not uncommon for some players to find that they excel at playing underwater hockey more than they do at traditional swimming.
The club is family-friendly and caters to individuals from late primary school age to the elderly. Underwater hockey is an inclusive sport that welcomes people of all genders and is also an LGTBQIA+ friendly club. Everyone is encouraged to join and be a part of the Geelong Underwater Hockey Club.
The club's training sessions take place on Wednesday nights from 6:10 pm to 7:30 pm at the Handbury Centre for Wellbeing, located on Foreshore Road in Corio, Victoria. These sessions provide an opportunity for members to improve their skills and fitness in a supportive and friendly environment. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player, the club welcomes you to come and play.
Geelong Underwater Hockey Club also competes at various levels, including state, national, and international competitions. Many players from the club have excelled, with notable achievements such as Flynn Dickson and Felix O'Shannassy playing key roles in Victoria's third-place finish at the 2023 Nationals.
The club's history dates back to the late 1970s when it was formed by several Geelong-based SCUBA clubs, including the Geelong Sub-Aqua Club, Torquay Turtles, Da Buoys, and others. These clubs sought an off-season or dirty weather activity to maintain fitness and connexions within the diving, wreck diving, and spearfishing communities. The early committee members and active participants played a pivotal role in the establishment and growth of the Geelong Underwater Hockey Club, with the league maintaining 12 teams by 1985.
In addition to regular training and competitions, the club also offers events and activities throughout the year, which can be found on their calendar. The website provides more information, including the club policies, latest news, and a gallery showcasing the club's activities and achievements.
