About

Gladstone District Bushwalkers is a sports club located in Tannum Sands – Boyne Island, in the Central Queensland region of Australia. The club offers a unique and exciting opportunity for individuals to connect with nature, unwind from the stresses of life, and engage in physical exercise through the activity of bushwalking.

The club's history dates back to 1989 when two local sisters, Mona Oliver and Brenda Beauchamp, had a vision of creating a community of like-minded individuals who shared a passion for bushwalking. Since then, the club has remained true to its founding principles, with many of the original members still actively involved in club activities.

The structure of Gladstone District Bushwalkers is simple and inclusive. Monthly general meetings provide a platform for all interested individuals to gather and discuss upcoming activities. A monthly newsletter is circulated among members, which includes detailed information about the degree of difficulty and the type of terrain that will be encountered during each activity. While walking is the primary focus, the club also organises related outdoor activities such as canoeing, cycling, navigation, and camping.

The majority of club activities are one-day excursions. Participants assemble in the morning, drive to the designated area, and spend the day immersed in outdoor activities such as walking or canoeing. Lunch is enjoyed amidst the beauty of the natural surroundings, often at scenic viewpoints. The aim is to return to town by dark, allowing members to return to their daily lives refreshed and rejuvenated.

The locations of the activities vary, ranging from coastal areas to dry terrains with limited water sources, as well as locations with creeks and waterholes for swimming and relaxation. These activities also provide an opportunity to appreciate the rich natural history and scenic attractions of the Central Queensland region.

One of the distinguishing features of Gladstone District Bushwalkers is the wealth of knowledge possessed by its members. With diverse interests in settlement history, geology, flora, and bird and animal life, members are always eager to share their knowledge and enhance the overall experience of each activity. Appointed walk leaders ensure that participants are well-informed and aware of any specific restrictions or requirements for each activity, such as limited numbers or the need for 4WD vehicles.

In addition to one-day activities, the club also offers weekend camps, longer through-walks, and social activities, catering to the varied preferences and capabilities of its members. Collaboration and shared activities with neighbouring bushwalking clubs further enrich the club's offerings.

What truly sets Gladstone District Bushwalkers apart is its relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The club attracts individuals from all walks of life and across all age groups. The diverse range of activities in the club's calendar ensures that there is something for everyone, whether they are beginners, children, or adventure enthusiasts. By joining the Gladstone District Bushwalkers, individuals can not only explore the natural wonders of the Central Queensland region but also form lasting friendships and connexions within a welcoming community.
