Gold Coast Rollerblaze Wheelchair Basketball is an inclusive sports club in Gold Coast, Australia that provides wheelchair basketball opportunities for the wider community. The club welcomes everyone to join, including able-bodied players and families.
The club's history dates back to February 2008 when a group of volunteers met with the Gold Coast City Council's Active and Healthy Programme. The first “Come and Try” day was held at PCYC Nerang in September 2008, with 15 players participating. In December 2008, RollerBlaze received its first basketball wheelchair, donated by Dean Rhodes, a player with the Brisbane Spinning Bullets.
Throughout the years, RollerBlaze has received various donations and support from organisations and individuals. Quota International - Robina donated a basketball wheelchair in March 2009, and the Gambling Machine Community Benefit Fund donated seven Quickie All Court basketball wheelchairs in May 2009. Gold Coast City Councillors and the Gold Coast Blaze graphic artists also contributed to the club by donating equipment and designing the RollerBlaze logo.
RollerBlaze has been actively involved in the community, participating in events such as the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony in May 2009 and hosting exhibition games during PCYC Week in July 2009. The club also launched its own Sporting Pulse website in October 2009.
In addition to providing wheelchair basketball opportunities, RollerBlaze values the contribution of its volunteers and welcomes individuals who are interested in giving their time and effort. Volunteers have the chance to learn about the sport and join a supportive and fun community. No experience is required, just a “can do” attitude.
For those who are interested in joining or learning more about wheelchair basketball, they can contact RollerBlaze via email at rollerblaze@bigpond. Com. The club also offers self-registration and online payment options for quick and easy sign-up.
Gold Coast Rollerblaze Wheelchair Basketball is dedicated to promoting inclusivity, sportsmanship, and the joy of wheelchair basketball within the Gold Coast community.
