The Griffith Cycle Club, located in the heart of Griffith City Council, is a vibrant sports club that welcomes new members to join and ride with them. The club offers the opportunity to cycle along the quiet country roads of the region, which is known for its rich and highly productive agricultural land. With vineyards, orchards, cereal crops, cotton, and rice thriving in the area, cyclists can enjoy the scenic beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Established in 1977, the Griffith Cycle Club has a proud history of cycling in the Riverina. The club provides both social and racing opportunities for its members. In fact, it has hosted prestigious events such as the Cycling NSW Masters Road Race Championships in 2014 and 2015, as well as Cycling Australia's National Masters Road Race Championships. What sets the Griffith Cycle Club apart is its high proportion of female riders, making it an inclusive and diverse community for riders of all levels.
Griffith itself is a vibrant and cosmopolitan community with a population of 26,000. The city prides itself on its multiculturalism, with over seventy nationalities calling Griffith their home. From Italian and Indian to Afghani and Pacific Islanders, the diversity of cultures adds to the local charm. Visitors can explore the multicultural community while discovering the region's food, wine, and sports.
Aside from cycling, the Griffith Cycle Club also values community support. They acknowledge the ongoing support of various local businesses, including Graham Riverina Grain, Bertoldos Bakery, Griffith Tile Centre, GB's Sport & Lifestyle, Tom's Cycle Centre, Griffith Exies Club, and Murrumbidgee Irrigation.
For anyone interested in joining or learning more about the Griffith Cycle Club, they can contact the club through their email at griffithcycleclub@gmail. Com or visit their website at griffithcycleclub. Com. The club also has a designated phone number for inquiries at 0401 830440.
In addition to organised club rides, Griffith also offers several social and training rides throughout the week. Although these rides are not officially organised by the Griffith Cycle Club, many club members participate in them. These rides serve as a great opportunity to meet fellow cyclists, learn about group riding, and gain information on how to join the club and obtain a Cycling Australia licence. The club provides a helpful “Guide to Rider Etiquette” for those interested in joining group rides.
The social weekly rides occur on Wednesday and Friday mornings, departing at 6:00 am from the corner of Wyangan Ave & Kooba St (heading out Wyangan Ave). These rides typically last 1 to 1 1/4 hours and maintain an average speed of 28-30 km/h, covering a distance of 25-30 km. Additionally, there are rides on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, leaving from the Plane on the Pole (Griffith Information Centre) on Banna Ave at 6:00am. These rides are also approximately 1 1/4 hours in duration and provide an opportunity to further explore the region on two wheels.
