Gundagai is situated on the Hume Hwy half way between Sydney and Melbourne. Celebrated in song and verse more than any other Australian town and home of The Dog On The Tuckerbox, most people associate our town with Bill the Bullocky and our pioneers. To many our most reveered landmark is our footy ground Anzac Park, home of the mighty Tigers Rugby League. Nestled on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River this ground has seen some of the most memoriable games played in country football.
Adelong is situated on the gold bearing Adelong Creek a little further upstream. The Adelong Herefords were a successful and respected Rugby League club but died as the town became smaller. Reforming as the Adelong Green & Golds and then merging with Batlow to become the Bears the club once more tasted success, but succumbed to the financial pressures of competing in Group 9 and no longer have a senior team. The two towns could almost be a world apart, in different shires and 30 km apart.
Despite this the towns have always enjoyed a close relationship. The Gundagai/Adelong Race club has existed for decades and there has always been a steady stream of football players drifting between the two towns. The Gundagai Adelong Junior Rugby League was born from the merger of the Gundagai and Adelong Minor Leagues clubs. This came about with the need to field every aged team from Under 7's to under 15's and participate in the revamped Group 9 Junior competion.
Gundagai Adelong competed as a joint club in 2004 in the Southern Highlands competition with the merger proving an outstanding success. The club winning the Under 11's, 12's 13's 14's and 15's Grand Finals. In 2005 the Group 9 vision for a new competition was realised and the Gundagai Adelong Juniors competed successfully in a much stronger competion with 5 teams gaining entry into the semi-finals. We have proved we can be competative against the much larger towns.
Our club divides its home matches between the hallowed turf of Anzac Park Gundagai, and The Adelong Showground. Training committments are Friday nights held in Gundagai and the last Friday of every month in Adelong. Committee meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month during the footy season, alternating between the Adelong Services & Citizens Club and the Gundagai RSL Club. If you are interested in attending, please do not hesitate to speak to a committee member.
We welcome all new members with open arms.
