Killara Croquet Club, located in the heart of Sydney's North Shore, is a sports club dedicated to the sport of croquet. Situated within Regimental Park on the corner of Lorne Avenue and the Pacific Highway in Killara, the club is conveniently within walking distance of the Killara Railway Station. The club boasts two well-maintained lawns that are considered among the best in Sydney, thanks to the diligent efforts of the Ku-Ring-Gai Council.
Croquet is a game that involves 2 or 4 players, each equipped with a mallet. The objective is to navigate a series of hoops and ultimately hit the final peg on a croquet lawn. The dimensions of the croquet court are 35 yards by 28 yards, creating a level grassed area perfect for engaging in the game.
Killara Croquet Club offers both the traditional form of the game, Association Croquet, and the newer version known as Golf Croquet. Association Croquet can be likened to a combination of golf, billiards, and chess, as it requires strategic thinking, planning, and skilful shots to succeed. On the other hand, Golf Croquet is a faster-paced variant that focuses on quick tactics and attempts to be the first player to pass through each hoop. Both forms of the game are enjoyable and suitable for players of all ages.
While croquet has often been associated with older individuals, Killara Croquet Club breaks this stereotype with players of all ages actively participating. In fact, the current world champion is a 54-year-old from the UK, and the club itself boasts a mother and son duo who are leaders in the world of Golf Croquet. The game is truly for everyone, including centenarians.
For those interested in trying out croquet, Killara Croquet Club provides several “Come and Try” sessions to get a taste of the fun, challenges, and friendships that come with the game. Additionally, the club offers a familiarisation and skills development course, consisting of six lessons with experienced coaches Fay Simpson and Ron Buist. The first three lessons are complimentary, and the remaining three are available at a cost of $10 each. The $30 fee is deducted from the membership fee if participants decide to join the club.
Killara Croquet Club welcomes new members and encourages those interested to inquire about their “Come and Try” package. With a commitment to promoting the sport, the club provides a welcoming environment for both beginners and experienced players alike.
