The Koondrook Basketball Association, located in The Council of the Shire of Wakool, is a sports club dedicated to fostering the development of basketball within the local community. Affiliated with the Barham Koondrook Junior Basketball Association, the club manages the local basketball competition which runs from October to April each year at the Barham Recreation Reserve.
With a focus on social inclusivity, the association welcomes kids aged 5 to 18 to participate in the competition, allowing them to not only develop basketball skills but also build social connexions. The association believes that promoting fitness and well-being is crucial in a small community such as Barham, and basketball provides an excellent outdoor recreational activity accessible to residents throughout the year.
The club heavily relies on volunteers who play diverse roles, including coaching, team management, coordinating the Aussie Hoops programme, and umpiring games. It provides great opportunities for older kids to get involved and learn new skills while making friends. These roles allow individuals to develop leadership skills, work with younger children, and assist them in learning basketball fundamentals, drills, and game strategies. The club also supports students involved in programmes like the Duke of Ed and PASS, in addition to those who simply have a passion for basketball and enjoy working with others.
There are even opportunities to obtain first aid certification and work with the committee on fundraising activities and club development.
The committee of the Koondrook Basketball Association comprises dedicated volunteers who are committed to providing basketball opportunities in the local area while keeping membership prices affordable for all children to participate. The committee meets once or twice a year outside the season to ensure the smooth running of the summer competition. Currently, the committee is seeking a Secretary to assist with office administration tasks such as sending advertisements to the newspaper and managing the club's Facebook page. Additional helpers are always welcome, and individuals can commit to as many tasks as their time allows.
The club encourages interested individuals to reach out or attend the annual general meeting held in August.
The association prioritises compliance with legislation and has adopted a new Working with Children policy. All coaches and umpires are required to have a current Working with Children's Check to ensure the safety of all participants. The committee is ready to provide assistance and guidance to those needing to obtain this check.
