Kulgun Orienteers is a prominent sports club based in Perth, Western Australia, dedicated to the sport of orienteering. The club prides itself on promoting the love for orienteering and providing opportunities for people of all ages and fitness levels to engage in this exciting outdoor activity.
Under the leadership of Convenor Dave Pass and Technical Director Graham Braid, Kulgun Orienteers hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including local competitions, training sessions, and a popular urban summer series known as MetrO. These MetrO events, which are dog- and pram-friendly, offer participants the chance to enjoy training during the summer months, explore different areas of Perth, and socialise with fellow orienteers. Many of the venues are located in scenic spots, making them perfect for post-run picnics or BBQ dinners.
In addition to the recreational aspect, Kulgun Orienteers also caters to serious runners who wish to participate in a series-long competition. Points are accumulated throughout the MetrO season, providing an extra level of competition to those looking to test their skills and improve their performances.
Kulgun Orienteers has a strong community spirit and regularly organises social events to celebrate achievements and foster camaraderie among members. Each year, the club hosts an end-of-year celebration at a picturesque location, such as Whiteman Park, where participants can reflect on their orienteering experiences and celebrate a successful year. At this event, OWA trophies and awards are also presented to deserving individuals for their outstanding contributions to the sport.
The club has gained recognition for its exceptional organisation and execution of major tournaments. Recently, Kulgun Orienteers successfully hosted the Kambarang Carnival, which spanned over nine days and included events such as the Australian Schools Championships and stage races in both natural and urban settings. These events showcased the diverse landscape of the Avon Valley, from Brookton to the Avon Valley National Park, and attracted participants from all over the country.
Kulgun Orienteers acknowledges and respects the Noongar people as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which their events take place. They recognise the importance of Indigenous culture and heritage and strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.
If you are interested in joining Kulgun Orienteers, whether you are an experienced orienteer or a beginner looking to try something new, the club offers coaching and training programmes to help you develop your navigation skills and fitness.
