Manilla Golf Club

The Manilla Golf Club, located on Halls Creek Road in Tamworth Regional Council, offers a unique golfing experience with its 9 hole course featuring sand greens. Maintaining a heritage feel from the past, the club was highly active during the 1950s-60s, hosting weekend competitions and open days that attracted many enthusiastic golfers. Junior golf was also a vibrant part of the club's identity during those days.

The clubhouse and entrance to the Manilla Golf Club feature a welcoming verandah adorned with tables and chairs, creating a pleasant space for socialising and enjoying refreshments. One can still reminisce about the past, remembering the sight of fathers driving tractors with mowers behind, meticulously mowing the course at night with a large spot light ahead of a major event like an Open Day. The club has continued to evolve, with a new front area and ramp established in 2016.

Near the clubhouse, visitors can take in breathtaking views of the course. Before a putt, players can grab a “scraper” and prepare a smooth track from where the ball lands to the hole area, demonstrating proper course etiquette. Green fees are clearly displayed near the 1st tee, ensuring everyone is aware of the cost and regulations for playing at the club.

The new front entrance faces the 1st tee, providing easy access for golfers to hit off from the first hole. For those wishing to observe games, there is covered seating available at the clubhouse. The 9th hole presents a challenge with its long par 5 and the need to hit over a dam. In the early 1960s, the dam was often filled with water, and young golfers would gleefully wade through the mud barefoot to find lost golf balls, which they would later sell to the members.

As a tribute to the club's history and the individuals who have contributed to its prosperity, Manilla Golf Club has established a Memorial Garden adjacent to the clubhouse. The garden serves as a place of remembrance for past players and members. A commemorative plaque acknowledges their contributions and ensures their legacy lives on.
