Manning Valley Cycle Club, located in Taree on the mid north coast of NSW, is a sports club catering to cyclists of all ages and abilities. Covering a wide area that includes Forster and Tuncurry, the club works closely with the Forster Triathlon Club and Manning-Great Lakes Tip Riders MTB Club.
With the formation of AusCycling as the peak body for all cycling disciplines, members of the Manning Valley Cycle Club are now able to compete in any section with just one licence. This allows for greater flexibility and opportunities for riders within the club.
The winter race programme typically begins in April and concludes in October, with races held on Saturday afternoons. The club has a selection of 7 road courses that are police and MidCoast Council approved, offering members and licenced visitors a variety of terrains to challenge themselves on, from hilly routes to flat time trial courses. The club also organises club events and participates in interclub challenges with the Port Macquarie Cycle Club.
During the daylight savings months of November to March, the club organises a summer criterium programme on Wednesday evenings. This programme makes use of 2 circuits, including a 1. 2 km criterium circuit at the Taree Recreational Ground on Bligh St and the Kolodong Industrial Estate circuit, both of which are police approved. These criterium circuits provide a safe and exciting race environment for members and non-members alike.
Affiliated with AusCycling, the club offers racing, recreational, and non-riding official's licences, with insurance cover provided. This ensures that members are protected while participating in club activities.
The club also welcomes anyone interested in joining or participating in training rides. Bunch and training rides cater to riders of different fitness levels and abilities, providing a supportive environment for all. It is important to note that these rides are not organised by the Manning Valley Cycle Club, and participants join at their own risk.
Manning Valley Cycle Club has a rich history that dates back to its official establishment in April 1963. Prior to this, cycling races in the area were conducted under the banner of the Taree Cycle Club since the early 1900s. Over the years, the club has hosted major events such as the Port Macquarie to Taree race, Kew to Taree race, and Gloucester to Wingham race. These events have attracted prestigious participants, including the Commonwealth Games team in 1982 and various state and country championships.
The club has invested in facilities to enhance the cycling experience in the area. They have a criterium circuit at the Taree Recreational Ground, a 1. 2 km track with a “hot mix” surface and lighting for night riding. This circuit also serves as a training ground for junior development programmes and is available for use by local schools for cycling programmes during school hours.
Additionally, the club has a clubhouse, which they share with the Manning Valley Hockey Association.
Manning Valley Cycle Club is a vibrant and inclusive cycling community that welcomes individuals passionate about the sport. Whether you are a competitive racer or a recreational rider, the club provides opportunities to develop skills, participate in races, and engage with fellow cycling enthusiasts.
