Welcome to Miyagi Kan, one of the most respected Karate organisations in Australia, located in Lismore, NSW. Founded in 1976 by Hanshi George Barounis, a 9th Dan black belt, Miyagi Kan offers training for adults and children of all ages. By joining Miyagi Kan, you will not only improve your ability to defend yourself but also increase your strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and overall confidence and wellbeing through karate training.
Miyagi Kan is a member of the NSW Karate Federation (NSWKF) and Australian Karate Federation (AKF), which are the official recognised governing bodies for karate by the Australian Sports Commission. This affiliation allows Miyagi Kan students to participate in sport karate competitions held by the AKF, including the NSW State Championships and National Championships. With local, national, and international competitions held throughout the year, Miyagi Kan students consistently excel at all levels of competition.
At Miyagi Kan, you can choose from a range of classes suitable for all skill levels, whether you are a beginner or advanced practitioner. Whether you are interested in learning karate's traditional roots, improving health and fitness, or competing at a local or international level, we have classes that will meet your needs. Our instructors, led by Hanshi George Barounis, have years of experience and are fully qualified to guide you on your karate journey. Hanshi Barounis is not only the President of the NSW Karate Federation but also served as the National Coach for the Senior Australian Karate team for over 10 years.
Karate is not just about self-defence; it is also a great practise for improving health, fitness, and overall wellbeing. Our dojo has a family-friendly and welcoming atmosphere, with a focus on learning and self-development. We believe in preserving the tradition of Go Ju-Ryu Karate-do, and our lineage can be traced back to the founder of the style, Chojun Miyagi, and the birthplace of karate in Okinawa.
