National Parks Association of the ACT

The National Parks Association of the ACT is a sports club based in Canberra, Australia. It was established in 1960 with the primary goal of creating a National Park for the National Capital. After 24 years of dedicated efforts, the association achieved this goal in 1984 when Namadgi National Park was proclaimed.

Today, the National Parks Association of the ACT works tirelessly to promote national parks, advocate for their proper management, and protect the region's fauna and flora, stunning scenery, natural features, and cultural heritage. The association achieves these objectives through lobbying, educational initiatives, and hands-on work parties.

The club offers a wide range of exciting outdoor activities for its members. These include field trips, work parties, day bushwalks, longer packwalks, snow-shoe walks, kayaking, and car camps. Through these activities, members have the opportunity to develop a deeper appreciation and enjoyment of the natural wonders and cultural heritage in the region.

The National Parks Association of the ACT publishes a quarterly full-colour Bulletin, which features interesting articles about the environment, related issues, and members' personal experiences in the bush. Additionally, the association produces a variety of expert-edited field guides.

Each month, the association holds general meetings where members can come together to engage in informal discussions with the committee and enjoy supper. These meetings often feature guest speakers who address a wide range of topics related to conservation and the environment. Members also receive a monthly eNewsletter called “Burning Issues” to stay updated on the latest developments and news.

The National Parks Association of the ACT acknowledges and pays respects to the Traditional Owners of the land on which they operate. They honour the First Nations Peoples and their Elders, both past and present.

To support their important work, individuals are encouraged to join the association, donate, and become actively involved in their initiatives. Through collective efforts, the National Parks Association of the ACT works towards preserving and celebrating the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Australian Capital Territory.
