Newtown City Hockey Club is the largest club in the Geelong Hockey Association and one of the largest hockey clubs in Victoria outside the Melbourne Metropolitan area. The club has a strong commitment to the development of junior players and prides itself on fostering a supportive and family-friendly culture. With members ranging in age from 3 to 70+, Newtown City Hockey Club offers a wide range of participation options regardless of experience.
During winter, which runs from April to September, the club competes in the Geelong Hockey Association competitions. There are teams available for boys, girls, men, and women of all ages. Junior teams are organised by age groups, ranging from Under 6 to Under 17. In addition, there are senior men's and women's teams that compete in both Division 1 and Division 2 of the Geelong Hockey Association competitions.
For those looking for a more relaxed and social atmosphere, the club also offers a summer season from October to February. This season provides an opportunity to continue playing hockey in a less competitive setting.
New players are always welcome at Newtown City Hockey Club, regardless of their skill level. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player returning to the field, there are options available for you.
The club was established in 1977 and has since grown to become the biggest hockey club in the Geelong region, boasting a membership of over 300. Its founding members, Alan Barnes, Gavin Allen, Noel Smith, and Dennis Hatton, recruited 18 junior members from local primary schools to kickstart the club's coaching programme. In 1981, the club relocated to King Lloyd Reserve in Newtown.
Newtown City Hockey Club is affiliated with both the Geelong Hockey Association and Hockey Victoria. Its mission is to field teams in competitions conducted by the GHA and other organisations, as well as promote and develop the game by providing coaching and pathways into playing hockey.
The club's vision is to be recognised as a leading hockey club in regional Victoria, known for its large and strong membership, successful teams, and contribution to the game's development and player skills.
