North End Boardriding Club

North End Boardriders was established in January 1976 at our spiritual home, Main Beach, Gold Coast. Founding members Tim Anderson along with his brother Johnny and Joe Engel decided to form a breakaway club from Main Beach Boardriders. The first North End club contest was held in front of the Southport Surf Life Saving Club, which became the home of NEB. Our rippers at the time experienced immediate success and in 1978 and 1979 we had successive victories in the prestigious Gold Coast Heenalua Contest against the other already established Gold Coast clubs.

Later in the year of ’79, North End won the coveted Gold Coast Teams Shield convincingly beating Snapper Rocks at Duranbah. North End Board Riders Club had well and truly arrived. The club continued its strong reputation throughout the 80s with the likes of Joe Engel, Wayne McKewen, Paul Milroy, Murray Pearce and Col Reaburn as our team riders. Along with a new and fresh committee headed by Vince Lawder as president, North End went from strength to strength and saw a young Michael ‘Munga’ Barry come through the ranks and go onto become the clubs first full time professional tour surfer.

He was the first of many successful North Enders to take on the World. North End has grown from strength to strength over the last four decades, and we are now one of the most recognisable, most successful and most respected clubs in the Australia. North End Boardriding Club turns 40 years old in 2016 and has now over 150 active members in eleven different age divisions, from our Groms in under 9’s right through to our Legends (over45’s). North End Boardriding Club has a long and proud history, and we plan on an even brighter future!
