Opportunities

  • A safe environment,
  • Positive relationships between young people, the community, and police.

    • 'Operation Resilience' In excess of 300 courses per year are offered to school students, community organisations, special needs groups and other clients to experience and promote the concepts of teamwork, decision-making, communication ,leadership and problem-solving.   An extension of this programme is offered in an outdoor environment, with similar levels of success.   Schools from Launceston to Smithton travel to Burnie PCYC to participate in this programme a testament to the quality of outcomes delivered for a very low participation cost.
    • ' Battlefit' Programme Burnie PCYC has a close relationship with Australian Defence Force Recruiting, and offers a programme specifically for local young people interested in a career with the ADF.

The club recently received some very affirmative feedback about the positive impact of this programme on a young person.

    • Burnie Challenge Burnie PCYC is a leading contributor to the concept that is now recognised as the Burnie Challenge, and the club has played a dominant role in delivering the programme over the past years.   Burnie PCYC's “low cost” ethos is reflected in the entry prices for the Burnie Challenge, which are remarkable when compared to similar commercial events.
    • Theatre Programmes Burnie PCYC has staged several successful seasons of theatre, with its productions of 'Little Shop of Horrors' and 'Hairspray' receiving congratulations and acclaim.

A significant outcome from these productions is the knowledge, skills, and confidence attained displayed by the young people who stage them.

    • Peer to Peer Mentoring Programmes Burnie PCYC brings together a broad cross-section of community members to participate in general training programmes which have an obvious health benefit for the participants.   However, the benefits of this programme extend to mentoring and guidance provided by the experienced members of the group to its younger members.
    • After School Activities Burnie PCYC opens its doors on Monday nights, for a gold coin entry fee, to large numbers of young people from all over Burnie to participate in supervised, unscheduled recreation activities.

    • Linkages to community organisations Burnie PCYC sees itself as the hub of a wheel, each spoke of which leads its young clients to a community organisation of their interest.   As such the club has links to martial arts groups, swimming clubs, surf lifesaving clubs, theatre groups, table tennis associations, basketball associations, Burnie Youth Choir, netball associations, scouts and cubs, hockey associations, tennis clubs, and more.
    • Outreach Programmes Burnie PCYC has developed plans to offer programmes in Circular Head, Devonport and the West Coast.
