The Peter Morton Academy of Ju-Jitsu Sunshine Coast, also known as PMAJJK, is a renowned sports club located in Nambour, Queensland. Established in 1962 by Soke Peter Morton, the academy operates as a not-for-profit organisation and has expanded to include branches across various regions in Australia, including the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia. PMAJJK aims to teach a practical, non-competitive style of martial art to people of all ages, emphasising self-defence techniques that utilise an attacker's strength to the defender's advantage.
One notable aspect of the academy is its focus on technique rather than strength, making it an inclusive environment for individuals of all genders and ages. PMAJJK is suitable for both children and adults who desire to learn practical self-defence skills rather than pursue competition. The academy's syllabus is primarily based on the teachings and techniques of Soke Shuho Sugita, the first Principal and Master of the Jishukan Ryu, which incorporates Kodokan Judo, Jujitsu, and Kempo Karate. Additionally, the senior syllabus includes elements of boxing and Australian Jujitsu, influenced by Soke Morton's background.
Classes at PMAJJK are conducted in a semiformal environment, allowing students to learn to react instinctively without a second thought. Through the training, students develop skills such as improved coordination, reflexes, physical fitness, self-control, and self-esteem. They also learn how to effectively manoeuvre any situation by leveraging principles of balance and momentum.
Beyond its martial arts teachings, PMAJJK embodies a spirit of inclusivity and community. Soke Morton initiated the academy with the intent to not only impart fitness but also extend a helping hand to those less fortunate. This mentality has fostered a sense of family within the academy, distinguishing it from other martial arts styles that often possess regimented attitudes. PMAJJK endeavours to ensure that Soke Morton's spirit is perpetuated through its leadership, guaranteeing the preservation of his legacy for future generations.
The mission of the academy revolves around promoting principles such as loyalty, humility, and respect among its members for their holistic betterment, the community, the environment, and the academy itself. By exposing members to these principles and teachings, PMAJJK aims to inspire dedication to the art and empower individuals to enhance their self-discipline, self-esteem, self-confidence, and general well-being of mind, body, and spirit.
PMAJJK is associated with the International Association of Martial Arts and holds a significant presence within the Australian Martial Arts Hall of Fame. The academy offers various classes across its branches including Charnwood, Erindale, Evatt, Hughes, Gilmore, Giralang, Palmerston, Gunning, Shoalhaven, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Kingaroy, Mount Isa, Walkerville, and Alice Springs. Members can access additional resources such as publications, articles, newsletters, rules and standards, glossary, events, gradings, awards, and academy merchandise through the official website.
