The Queanbeyan Kanagaroo Rugby League Football Club was origionally founded to overcome the lack of opportunity for those wishing to play rugby league. The club was formed in 1966 to comepe in Group 8, Second Dvision. After winning the premiership in 1967 the club was then promoted to first divison in 1968.
The club then went on to win leadingships in 1969/70/71, 1983 and again in 1985 . The Kangaroos were then up and down the ladder for the next 25years, so at the end of 2009 the Kangaroos went about a more methodical recruitment policy and signed former ST George, French Catalans and current Bronco hooker Aaron Gorrell.
Aaron Immediately went to work in season 2010 and honed the side into a real premiership threat and finally after 25 years the club won the 1st grade competition and then went “back to back” in 2011. The clubs reserve grade side made the semi’s in both those years with the under 18’s winning the division 2 competition in 2011 as well. In 2012 first grade made the Grand Final again under the guidance of Aaron and went down in the last 10 minutes of the game. In 2013 we had all 3 grades in the Grand Finals.
Under 18's narrowly lost and both Reserve and First Grades were premiers unsetting cross town rivals the Queanebeyan Blues. Reserve Grade won 20 points to 18 and First Grade won in a nail biter 17 points to 16 in extra time.
Aaron has once again agreed to captain coach the clubs 1st grade side in 2014 along with Reserve Grade and Under 18 coaches still to be appointed.
The camaraderie between the three sides makes us one of the most popular clubs for players to be affiliated with, and all new players are made welcome. Training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights for all senior grades staring at 6. 30pm.
The Roos also have sides from under 6’s to under 16’s in the junior competition. The juniors also have a “Joeys” training for 3 to 5 year olds who want to learn some skills before joining the competition in under 6’s.
Our home ground is Freebody Oval which can be viewed by supporters and parents from inside the beautiful furnishings of the licenced club.
