RAID Basketball YMCA Canberra

RAID Basketball YMCA Canberra is a sports club located in Canberra, Australia. The club provides a basketball programme specifically designed for individuals with intellectual disabilities. It offers participants the opportunity to be part of a team and enjoy the game of basketball while fostering friendship, pride, and confidence.

The RAID programme has been running since 1984, and some participants have been involved for over 20 years. Each Wednesday during term time, the club gathers at the Radford College Basketball Gym, temporarily located at Canberra Grammar School in Red Hill, ACT.

The evening starts at 6:30pm with a beginners' game, followed by an advanced game at 7:30pm. The participants are divided into teams based on their skill level and pace of play. Modified rules are used to ensure that all players can actively participate. Approximately 30 RAID participants and 6–10 volunteers from Radford College join in the games each week.

The Radford student volunteers play a crucial role in the programme. They actively engage in the games, passing the ball, coaching, and supporting participants who may need extra encouragement. This partnership fosters a positive team spirit and ensures that every RAID player has equal participation and enjoys the experience.

The RAID participants display enthusiasm, competitiveness, and noise during the games. For many, this programme provides a chance to form lasting friendships that greatly impact their lives. Some participants have limited social contact outside their home, and RAID basketball offers them a vital opportunity to socialise and reduce their sense of social isolation.

The collaboration between YMCA and Radford College began in 2006 when students from Radford's Team Support Programme started volunteering with the inclusive basketball programme. The presence of these students adds a meaningful sense of camaraderie, friendship, fun, and laughter to the programme.
