RDA Bundaberg is a voluntary and not-for-profit sports club located in Bundaberg, Queensland. The club provides therapeutic and recreational horse riding programmes for individuals with disabilities, ranging from 3 years to 73 years of age, in order to improve their quality of life.
At RDA Bundaberg, they offer a variety of horse-related activities that benefit people with various disabilities, including intellectual and specific learning disorders, injuries from accidents, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, visual and hearing impairments, autism, and more. These activities aim to improve core strength and stability, develop co-ordination and balance, enhance speech and communication skills, build confidence, and enable social interaction.
In addition to the therapeutic benefits, horse riding at RDA Bundaberg also provides a fun outdoor activity for individuals who may find it challenging to participate in mainstream sports. The club operates most weeks on the first, second, third, and fourth Wednesdays, excluding school holidays, from 9 am to 1:30 pm.
RDA Bundaberg welcomes volunteers to join their group and provides regular training to ensure the best experiences for both clients and volunteers. The club has qualified RDA coaches who can provide training for volunteers seeking competencies, certificates, and accreditations in their discipline. Volunteers can get involved in various roles such as coaching, horse handling, side walking, equipment setup, grooming, tack maintenance, leading horses, arena surface maintenance, stable cleaning, office work, fundraising, committee participation, catering, promotion, and more.
RDA Bundaberg is part of a larger organisation called Riding for the Disabled Association of Queensland (RDAQ), which operates 18 centres across Queensland. RDAQ has 65 coaches, 700 volunteers, 100+ horses, and serves 554 riders. Established in 1985, RDA Bundaberg has been making a positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities in the area.
