Royal Park Tennis Club, located in Melbourne, is a historic sports club that has been serving the local community since 1889. With a rich history that intertwines with four other tennis clubs, Royal Park Tennis Club has grown from a two-court facility to a 14-court complex. The club operates with a community-based, open access philosophy, welcoming players of all ages and skill levels.
The roots of Royal Park Tennis Club can be traced back to Prince Park Tennis Club, which was established in 1889 as an adjunct to the Bowling Club in the Princes Park grounds. Over the years, other clubs such as the Blue Triangle Club, Victorian Railways Institute (VRI), and St. Ambrose Tennis Club (St. ATC) joined the Royal Park family, contributing to the expansion of the courts and facilities.
In 1946, Princes Park Tennis Club moved across to Royal Park and took over the courts previously set up by the Blue Triangle Club. In 1956, a clubhouse was established in an ex-army hut, marking an important step in the development of the club. Amalgamations and renovations throughout the years led to the establishment of a complex with 14 courts by 1992.
Royal Park Tennis Club has made significant investments in upgrading and maintaining its facilities, investing over $1 million over the past 20 years. All courts are floodlit, allowing for night tennis, and the club boasts world-class tennis surfaces that have been praised by members and visitors alike.
In 2014, the club employed a full-time manager and opened a member's bar, providing a welcoming and social atmosphere for all members and guests. Renovations to the main clubhouse and the addition of decking in 1995 further enhanced the club's amenities.
Membership at Royal Park Tennis Club has surpassed the 500 mark, reflecting the club's popularity and dedication to serving the local community. The club welcomes feedback, and members and guests have praised the facility for its outstanding tennis surfaces, well-maintained courts, and friendly staff. The club also offers court hire, making it accessible to non-members who want to enjoy a game of tennis.
Located in a picturesque setting with lovely park surrounds, Royal Park Tennis Club offers a quaint and inviting atmosphere for tennis enthusiasts. With its rich history and commitment to providing a top-notch tennis experience, Royal Park Tennis Club is a true gem in the Melbourne sports community.
