Sailability Whitsunday

Sailability Whitsunday, located in Airlie Beach - Cannonvale, is a sports club dedicated to providing a fun and safe environment for individuals with disabilities, as well as their partners and carers, to experience sailing and alternative on-water activities. As one of 15 clubs operating within Queensland, Sailability Whitsunday is part of the worldwide organisation of Sailability, which aims to support those with disabilities and special needs through recreational sailing.

The club boasts a fleet of 303 Hansa Access dinghies, which feature a two-person sling seat that accommodates both the skipper and sailor. These dinghies are suitable for teaching and sailing skills and are impossible to capsize, ensuring a safe experience on the water. Additionally, Sailability Whitsunday provides a support boat for rescue and emergency situations, as well as course supervision, and an observer boat for those who may not be able to actively participate in sailing but still want to enjoy the sights from a water viewpoint.

Sailing sessions and activities are held every second Tuesday, weather permitting. Volunteers are on-site from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, while sailors and their carers can join from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The club is located downstairs at the Whitsunday Sailing Club, offering convenient access to the water. To make bookings or notify the club of any special equipment requirements, such as slings, hoists, wheelchairs, or yard access, individuals can contact Sailability Whitsunday at 0499 835 111.

Participation at Sailability Whitsunday is affordable, with a $10 fee that includes multiple sails when applicable. There is also a $2 cost for an onion and sausage sizzle (when available) and soft drinks. Tea, coffee, and chilled water are provided for free, and individuals are welcome to bring their own containers. Laughs, smiles, and jokes are always on the house!

The club prioritises the safety and well-being of its participants and carers, offering a safe and positive environment during fun-filled sessions. Sailability Whitsunday operates with updated COVID-safe accredited plans in conjunction with the Whitsunday Sailing Club and follows Queensland government guidelines, including approved risk assessment plans and emergency procedures. The club provides disabled and wheelchair-friendly toilet facilities, as well as all necessary safety equipment.

Participants have the opportunity to access all boats, with hoist facilities available, and can choose between sailing sessions in stable boats or a trip on the club's motor boat. Skippers are present to encourage individuals to learn to sail and deliver basic sailing instructions. The club also offers undercover areas for relaxation, first aid facilities, and a defibrillator in case of emergencies.

To ensure a smooth sailing experience, participants are encouraged to refrain from mobile social media usage throughout the day, as it is an outdoor activity. Prior to attending sailing days, individuals are required to notify the club of their attendance by sending an SMS to 0499 835 111 by 6:00 pm on the Friday evening before. The club will notify participants by 7:30 am on sailing day if the event is cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

When preparing for a sailing session, participants are advised to bring sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, sun-safe clothing, a towel, and enclosed shoes or secure sandals, as the pontoon can get hot. It is also recommended to bring a water bottle and any necessary medication.
