The Scottish Country Dance Society, Inc. in Darwin is a sports club that focuses on teaching and practising Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) for anyone interested in this fun and social activity. Founded in 1985, the society started as a small social class and became an RSCDS Affiliated Group in 1988. It reached full RSCDS Branch status in 1992, with the aim of establishing good SCD in Darwin and providing a focal point for the RSCDS in the isolated SE Asian region.
Today, the society is an independent incorporated group to facilitate responsive management in an isolated environment. The society is led by experienced and fully trained RSCDS teachers, Angus and Puka Henry, who were also two of the original founders in 1985. The couple has a wealth of experience in teaching SCD and has been involved in various dance workshops, demonstrations, and classes in Australia and Singapore.
The society holds regular weekly dance sessions and offers 10-week beginners courses throughout the year as needed or requested. The classes are open to beginners and no prior experience or partner is required. The sessions are designed to teach SCD in easy steps while providing a fun and enjoyable experience. Scottish Country Dance is a social team dancing activity done for fun and not for performance or competition.
It is a great way to stay fit and active while forming new friendships.
To become a member of the society, an annual associate membership fee of $50 is required. Class attendance is $5 per session, and the costs for beginners courses can be found on their website. The society also offers reduced rates for groups and families. New beginners course information is regularly updated on their notice board, and interested individuals can get in touch via their contact form or by phone.
