The club prides itself on its commitment to water safety and the protection of beachgoers. Members participate in regular patrols, ensuring the safety and well-being of swimmers and surfers along the Brighton Jetty to the Broadway, Glenelg South stretch of beach. These patrols, which take place on weekends and public holidays between October and April, require only a few days of commitment each month, making it an ideal opportunity for members to give back to the community while enjoying time at the beach.

For those looking to further their skills, Somerton SLSC offers a range of surf life-saving qualifications. The Bronze Medallion is the starting point for all patrolling and competing members, providing comprehensive training in essential life-saving techniques. Younger members, aged between 13 and 15 years, can pursue the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), which acts as a stepping stone to the Bronze Medallion and allows them to join a patrol group. Other courses, such as Provide First Aid, IRB Drivers, ATV Operator, and Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, are also available to members.
