Southern Soaring League

Southern Soaring League (SSL) is a historic sports club located in the Alexandrina Council in South Australia. Established in 1973, SSL is known as Australia's home of gliding and welcomes both experienced glider pilots and those who are interested in learning to fly park flyers and electric sport aircraft.

With a strong membership base of around 80 members, including individuals who have been part of the club for over 25 years, SSL boasts a tight-knit community at the heart of its operations. The main flying site, SSL Park, is situated in Milang, approximately 40 minutes south of Adelaide. This site has witnessed thrilling F3J, F5J, and F3B National competitions and has served as the launching place for Australian representatives in international competitions.

In addition to regular gliding activities, SSL also hosts monthly Scale Aerotow days, a tradition that dates back many years and continues to draw enthusiasm from members and visitors from surrounding clubs. The club prides itself on providing a supportive and inclusive environment for individuals with a passion for gliding and a commitment to learning and improving their skills.

SSL recently celebrated a major milestone with the successful organisation of its 50th Anniversary Festival of Gliding. The event attracted pilots from around Australia and even international participants, with renowned RC glider legend Philip Kolb joining the festivities for 12 days of flying. The festival featured various activities including the annual F5J International competition, GPS triangle racing, and scale flying. Philip Kolb delivered talks on glider design and provided valuable insights into GPS triangle flying, offering guidance on course flying, glider setup, and pilot physiology.
