Special Olympics Clubs – North Coast is a sports club in Coffs Harbour that is proud to be part of the Special Olympics network. Their aim is to provide a range of sport, recreation, social, and health opportunities for individuals with an intellectual disability. The club believes in the power of sport to help individuals have fun, be healthy, build self-esteem, demonstrate courage, and make friends.
Special Olympics Australia is part of a global sporting community for individuals with an intellectual disability. It was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister to US President John F Kennedy, and has grown into a global movement that supports over 5 million athletes in 177 countries. In Australia, Special Olympics began in 1976 and continues to seek public support to ensure that individuals with an intellectual disability are not shut out. By providing opportunities for individuals to participate in sport, the club aims to open the door to personal achievement, pride, and social inclusion.
Special Olympics Clubs – North Coast aims to increase awareness and participation in sport for individuals with an intellectual disability. With only 3,000 athletes currently participating with Special Olympics Australia out of the 850,000 people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism in the country, they need support to reach more individuals and spread the joy of sport and community. The club encourages individuals to donate, volunteer, or participate in order to make a difference.
Unlike physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities may not always be obvious. Individuals with intellectual disabilities may find it harder to perform tasks that are considered basic, such as reading, handling money, or using public transport. However, they can still learn and succeed with the right support and accommodations.
