Suit your needs. Whether you are a novice rider or a seasoned professional, Spokes Cycle Club welcomes all levels of cyclists. Our club has been promoting cycling in the City of Greater Geraldton since March 1992, and we are proud to be the largest cycling club north of Perth.
Joining Spokes Cycle Club is as easy as showing up with your bike and a little enthusiasm. If you don't have a bike yet, don't worry! Get in touch with us, and our experienced members can guide you in the right direction. We have a wealth of collective cycling experience within our club, and we are more than happy to help you on your cycling journey.
The best way to stay motivated and enjoy bike riding is by connecting with like-minded individuals. Joining a group of cyclists and riding together can be a great source of motivation. Start by riding for 30 minutes to an hour several days a week, giving your body time to adjust to the bike. Focus on breathing steadily and from your diaphragm as you pedal.
Gradually increase the time and intensity of your rides, and work on skills such as balance and getting on and off the bike, especially if you're riding in traffic.
As a beginner, training at the club level is the best approach. This is where you can develop skills and tactics to maximise your fitness. To become faster and build endurance, challenge yourself by riding with a group that pushes your limits or incorporating intervals into your rides. Pedal three sets of intervals to improve your cardiovascular fitness.
Additionally, incorporate more hills into your routes and gradually increase the length of your long ride each week by 10 percent to consistently challenge your body.
Speed and power are crucial in cycling events that often finish with a sprint. Devote a portion of your training to speed and power by doing 10 to 30 second maximum efforts with short breaks. Start with 3–4 efforts per session and gradually increase to around 10 over several weeks. This will help improve your speed.
Recovery is an important aspect of training. Ensure you get enough sleep, maintain good nutrition, stretch, and consider getting regular massages to aid in recovery.
Check our calendar of events and the list of meeting points for training rides, which include times and average speeds. For beginners, we have slower groups that prioritise looking after and encouraging riders, ensuring that no one gets left behind. Join Spokes Cycle Club and connect with members who ride at a similar pace and in your area.
When buying your first bike, consider your needs and preferences. While you don't need a fancy bike to enjoy cycling, if you plan on participating frequently, you may want to invest in a higher-end model. For Spokes events, a road bike with drop bars and thinner tyres will help you go faster. Test-ride bikes before making a purchase if possible, and see what suits you best.
Getting fitted to the bike is also crucial. Many bike shops offer bike fitting services with a new purchase, where a professional will check your saddle height and body angles while riding. A properly fitted bike will be more comfortable and reduce the risk of injuries. Some brands even offer gender-specific geometry to ensure a better fit.
Join Spokes Cycle Club today and experience the wonderful world of cycling with like-minded individuals. We offer various membership options to suit your needs. Enjoy the benefits of cycling, make new friends, and be a part of a thriving and supportive cycling community.
