Stanthorpe Carlton United Football Club, located in Southern Downs Regional, has a rich history that dates back to its formation in the early 1970s. Originally established as the Inter 'Wolves' team, the club was born out of a division within the International Football Club, the dominant force in the local football competition at the time. Dissatisfied with the International Club's decision to take some of their players, the Inter 'Wolves' formed their own club with the sponsorship of Marty Driscol from O'Mara's Hotel, which was owned by Carlton United Breweries. Thus, the Stanthorpe Carlton United Football Club was born.
The team selected maroon and blue with a white trim as their colours, and the Black Bear became the club's mascot. Under the leadership of President and Head Coach Shane Dullahide, the Carlton United Bears began their inaugural season in 1974 with a squad of sixteen players. Notably, the team included talented individuals such as Mario Torrisi, Ross Johnson, and Joe Vedelago.
From 1974 to 1985, the club was primarily run by the players themselves. During this period, the Carlton United Bears achieved remarkable success, winning a total of nine premierships, including titles in 1974, 1978, 1981, 1983, and 1985. The 1979 season proved to be a disappointing one for the Bears, as they went undefeated throughout the season only to lose the Grand Final to Tenterfield by four goals to two.
The club's greatest victory, apart from the 1974 Grand Final win, came in the 1983 Grand Final against Stanthorpe City. At halftime, the Bears were trailing three goals to nil and were down to only nine players due to two red cards. However, displaying true Carlton spirit, they managed to mount a remarkable comeback and forced a draw at three all. A replay was scheduled, and in front of the largest crowd ever assembled for a local football match in Stanthorpe, the mighty Bears triumphed in extra time with a thrilling 3-2 scoreline.
In addition to their success at the top level, Carlton United also formed a second division team called the Carlton Cubs two years after their inception. The Cubs went on to win three leadingships. Over the years, the structure of the competition changed, and the club introduced under 17s Colts Division, a ladies side named the Carlton Cuddlies, and a second division team known as the Carlton Grizzlies.
While the A-Grade side remained competitive and featured in multiple Grand Finals from 1986 onwards, it wasn't until 2005 that the Bears were able to secure another topship. Coached by Mario Torrisi, the team emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win against Stanthorpe United. In the last decade, the club's ladies and Colts teams have consistently featured in numerous Finals and Grand Finals.
Stanthorpe Carlton United Football Club boasts a storied past and continues to be a prominent force in the local football scene. With a strong sense of camaraderie and determination, the club is committed to promoting the growth of the sport and nurturing talented players within the community.
