Sunshine Square and Round Dance Club is a sports club located in Brisbane, specifically in Redcliffe. The club has recently moved to a new venue, the St Mary's Anglican Church Hall on Sutton Street. The club holds dancing sessions every Friday evening from 6:30 to 9:30, featuring square dancing, round dancing, line dancing, and old-time dancing.
The club has a rich history, with 34 years of dancing at the Clontarf Community Hall before handing it over to a charity in 2022. The members cherish their memories of dancing at Clontarf and are excited to make new memories at the new venue. In the year 2023, the club will be transitioning to private dance lessons and sessions, with the details of the venues yet to be advised.
The club's caller, Lynette Nurser, has been an active participant in dance for many years. She started dancing at the Pine Rangers Square Dance Club in Clontarf when she was 15 years old. Lynette quickly developed a passion for calling and round dance cueing, and within a year, she was calling for Pine Rangers and running her own round dance club, Sunshine Rounds.
Lynette's dedication and talent in calling and cueing led her to many opportunities, including calling for weekend festivals like the Gympie Goldrush, Summer Holiday, and Winter Wonderland. She was also invited to join the East Meets West team as their cuer for the weekend dances, which she considers a highlight of her dancing career. In 2011, Lynette had the honour of being the round dance cuer for Brian Hotchkies' special anniversary dance celebrating 50 years of calling.
Lynette has two daughters, Felicity and Amelia. She called for Pine Rangers for 15 years but temporarily closed the club when Felicity was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 4. After Felicity's successful treatment, Lynette realised her passion for club calling was still strong, leading her to start the Sunshine Square and Round Dance Club in 2009. Lynette also became a co-caller for Taigum Twirlers, a club that expanded and moved to the Clontarf Community Hall in 2015.
The club welcomes dancers of all skill levels and provides a friendly atmosphere to enjoy various types of dancing. It is a great place to meet new friends, stay fit, and have fun. Whether you are a beginner wanting to learn square or round dancing or an experienced dancer looking for a welcoming community, Sunshine Square and Round Dance Club in Brisbane is the place to be.
