Sutherland Loftus United JRLFC is a renowned sports club located in Sydney, Australia. With a rich history dating back to 1912-13, the club was founded by Jim Brady, a local barber and popular figure in the community. Initially known as Sutherland Junior Rugby League Football Club, the team played their games in a paddock that is now Robertson Street in Sutherland.
During the first world war, the club's progress was interrupted as many players volunteered for the Armed Forces. However, after the war and a flu epidemic in 1919, the team regrouped and formed again in 1920. They played their home games at Waratah Park, which was cleared and marked by volunteer labour. It wasn't until 1931 that the club truly made a name for itself.
Coached by Sam Wheeler, the Sutherland “B” grade team, also known as the “Grave Diggers” due to the proximity to Sutherland Cemetery, won the St. George Junior Rugby League competition.
Throughout the years, the club has produced famous names in Rugby League, such as Len Kelly, who held a record for games played with St. George and has served as a selector and President for the team. Other notable players include Jack Kelly and George Taylor, both St. George players and referees who have been International Touch Judges in numerous Interstate matches.
As Sutherland Loftus United JRLFC enters its 111th year in 2023, the club invites everyone to support their sponsors who generously contribute to the success of the club. They also proudly announce Club on East Sutherland as their sponsor, located just 300 metres from the clubhouse, making it a convenient spot for members to enjoy drinks and great food at reasonable prices.
