The Alexandra Headland Malibu Club, located in Queensland's Sunshine Coast, is a sports club that celebrates the rich history and culture of surfing at Alexandra Headland. The club's origins trace back to a time long before the current generation, even before well-known surfers like 'Slug' Kelk and gangly young McLardy made their way to The Korner to park their boards in the dunes for the weekend.
The club honours the pioneers of surfing at Alexandra Headland, from the Wilkes generation to the O'Connor family who played a role in shaping the Headland. Even before their time, surfers were enjoying the waves at Alex, including the South Sea Islander community and their ancestors who came down from Buderim. The club recognises that the surf heritage of the area stretches back even further, to a time known as The Dreaming when turtles ruled the coast.
The story of the Alexandra Headland Malibu Club begins in 1975, when Rooster entrusted the keys to the Headland to Seaweed. The iconic “yuk, yuk, yuk gone surfing” sign that once taunted those headed to school was temporarily taken down, and the club's doors opened on Saturday mornings. In those early days, two key figures in the club's story, Mighty Mal and Ron, resided on the tank-stand. These longboards, both about 9'6”, were integral to the club's identity and were cherished by the members.
During the late 1970s, the surfing scene was dominated by short boards and high-performance manoeuvres. The club recognised The Korner's role in surfing innovation, with the introduction of modern materials and the visits of influential surfers like HK and GG. The legacy continued with surfers like MacT and Jim Pollard, who channelled the spirit of the shop and pushed the boundaries of what was possible on a board.
The Alexandra Headland Malibu Club organises various events throughout the year, including the Annual Club Awards, the Old Mal Rally, and the JNR Longboard Competition. These events showcase the club's commitment to preserving the history and traditions of longboarding, while also providing a platform for current surfers to showcase their skills. The Winter Longboard Classic is a particularly popular event, drawing participants from near and far to compete and celebrate the love of the sport.
In addition to its events, the club also publishes a newsletter to keep members and the wider surfing community informed about upcoming activities and news. The club proudly displays a gallery of past events and accomplishments, showcasing the passion and dedication of its members.
The Alexandra Headland Malibu Club welcomes surfers of all ages and experience levels who share a love for the waves and a deep appreciation for the history and culture of surfing. Whether you're a seasoned longboarder or just starting your surfing journey, the club offers a supportive and inclusive community where you can connect with fellow surfers and celebrate the unique spirit of Alexandra Headland.
