At VAJU Inc. , we believe in the philosophy of Kodokan Judo, as established by Jigorō Kanō. Our goal is to not only develop strong and skilled judo practitioners but also to shape individuals with good character and a sense of community. Through the practise of Kodokan Judo, our members naturally achieve a high level of fitness and mental vigour.
We offer various training programmes and activities to cater to the needs and interests of our members. This includes learning both Tachiwaza (standing techniques) and Ne waza (ground techniques), engaging in Randori (free practise), mastering Kata (pre-designed forms), and exploring the cultural aspects of Kodokan Judo.
The president of the Victorian Amateur Judo Union, Mr. Ivan Zavetchanos, is a highly respected figure in Australian Judo. With an impressive career and extensive experience, Mr. Zavetchanos has played a significant role in the development of judo in Australia.
His leadership and expertise guide our organisation in promoting and establishing Kodokan Judo in Victoria.
Our rich history dates back to 1952 when the Victoria Amateur Judo Union was founded in Brunswick, Victoria. As a founding member of the Judo Federation of Australia, we were instrumental in gaining recognition for Judo from the Australian Olympic Federation. Although faced with challenges in the past, we adapted and in 1981, organised the formation of the Australian Kodokan Judo Association (A. K.
J. A), expanding membership across all states of Australia.
As a club, we organise regular tournaments and events throughout the year, offering our members the opportunity to put their skills to the test and compete at various levels. Furthermore, we provide a supportive and inclusive environment for both beginners and experienced judoka, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and valued.
