West Toowoomba Bowls Club, located at 331 – 339 Hume Street, South Toowoomba, is a beloved sports club with a rich history and a vibrant community. Originally known as the West End Bowling Club, it was established in response to the formation of the Darling Downs Bowling Club in 1900. The club's name has undergone several changes over the years, from West End Bowling Club to West Toowoomba Bowling Club, and finally to its current name, West Toowoomba Bowls Club Inc.
Throughout its history, West Toowoomba Bowls Club has experienced many significant milestones. These include the purchase of the first two blocks of land in Rome Street in May 1910, the laying of the first green in Rome Street in July 1910, and the official opening of the first green named the H. W. (Mick) Hard Green in 1911.
Affiliation with the Queensland Bowling Association also took place during the first Annual General Meeting in October 1911.
Over the years, the club continued to grow and evolve. The ladies' bowling club was formed in August 1936, and a new clubhouse was officially opened in 1937. Play began on the Taylor Street green in February 1951, and the club shifted its clubhouse to its current location in July 1957. The introduction of poker machines in March 1992 marked another milestone for the club.
In recent years, the club has faced some changes and challenges. Discussions began in August 2017 about relocating to Glenholme Park, and in February 2018, a special general meeting was held to engage a real estate agent for expressions of interest in purchasing the club's land and buildings. Eventually, in April 2019, the decision was made to commit to the development of Glenholme Park.
However, on December 31, 2020, West Toowoomba Bowls Club Inc ceased operations and closed its doors at its original location on the corner of West and Taylor Streets. The club has since relocated to Club Toowoomba at 331 Hume Street as a probationary period with the intention of determining its future direction.
West Toowoomba Bowls Club Inc continues to be a thriving sports club, dedicated to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for bowlers of all ages and skill levels. With its remarkable history, beautiful greens, and passionate members, it remains a beloved institution in Toowoomba's sporting landscape. Whether you're a seasoned bowler or a beginner looking to try your hand at the sport, West Toowoomba Bowls Club is the place to be.
