The Western Australian Ice Skating Association (WAISA) is the leading organisation for Figure and Synchronised Skating in Western Australia. Founded in March 1977 by a group of passionate parents and skaters, WAISA's primary objective is to support its members and affiliated clubs in promoting participation in Figure and Synchronised Skating at both competitive and developmental levels in WA.
Throughout its history, WAISA has seen remarkable individuals contribute to its success. Les Marshall, the first president of WAISA, laid the foundation for the association's growth. Les Latham, a founding member and one of WAISA's longest-serving presidents, later became a WAISA/ISA National Judge and a member of Ice Skating Australia (ISA) Council. The annual Les Latham Artistic Trophy is a testament to his enduring legacy.
Tony and Ilze Jonikis, early members of WAISA, rose to prominence as national and international judges while also playing a significant role in the early promotion of Synchronised Skating. Ilze also served as WAISA secretary for several years, and both Tony and Ilze were council members of ISA. Throughout the years, three WAISA officials, Lynne Downing, Carole Ashworth, and Kylie Yacopetti, have been elected to the ISA Board of Management.
WAISA's competitors made their debut in the Novice division at the 1978 Australian Figure Skating Championships in Sydney and have represented Western Australia each year since. Additionally, WAISA has had the privilege of hosting five Australian Figure Skating Championships in 1983, 1989, 1996, 2000, and 2005.
WAISA operates based on its governance and policies outlined in its Constitution, Strategic Plan, and Operational Plan. The association aims to foster clear communication, as evident in its position statement on acquiring and displaying images of children and its inclusion commitment statement.
For those interested in joining WAISA, the association offers membership registration that can be completed online using Secure Pay. Members can also book and pay for their next ISA test online using the Register Now feature. Moreover, competitors can register and pay for upcoming WAISA competitions through the association's website.
