Western Speedway

Western Speedway, located in the Southern Grampians Shire, is a renowned sports club that has been active for over 50 years. Originally established as a privately owned company, Western Speedway opened its doors to the public in the early years before temporarily closing down. In 1970, the Hamilton Motor Sports Association was formed, taking charge of the legal aspects and subsequently purchasing the speedway site from Colin Gilmore of Mount Gambier.

Over the years, the Hamilton Speedway Drivers Club has taken control of the race meetings, operating under the direction of local club members. The track officially opened in December 1972 and has been a staple in the racing community ever since. In 1984, the Hamilton Speedway Drivers Club became incorporated as a not-for-profit body to further support its mission of providing exciting and competitive racing events in the region.

Western Speedway boasts a fantastic track that has seen some impressive lap records. The current lap record stands at an astonishing 11. 10 seconds, achieved by Domain Ramsay in a Sprintcar. The track stretches 436 metres from pole to pole and features a clay-lime mix surface.

It is 14 to 15 metres wide and is surrounded by a concrete safety fence topped with a mesh catch fence. Spectator safety is a priority, with an additional fence set back for added protection.

The club is led by a dedicated committee consisting of President Travis McIntosh, Vice President Mark Crawford, Secretary Tanya Eastwood, and Treasurer Bronwyn Arnel. The general committee includes Tim Field, Peter Worthy, Rob Aldridge, Dehne Sparrow, Mark Riley, and Chris Byrnes.
